“Food is not the enemy. It’s how much you eat! That is the point of a wise person who knows much about body and food relationships. Giada De Laurentiis, one of America’s favorite chefs who cooks up to-die-for dishes is definitely on friendly terms with her body too.
The kitchen queen also known as SELF’s December cover girl shares her little secrets of keeping fit:
Combine rich foods with lots of greens. “I eat pasta but a small portion, not a giant one, and I eat more greens than carbs,” De Laurentiis reveals. Match a leafy salad with with your favorite lean meat. As an alternative you can chose a small side of mashed potatoes accompanied with a larger helping of steamed green beans. Giada’s Skewered Greek Salad would be also a great choise.
Stick to certain portion sizes, find out how much food is sensible for you. “A good gauge is to think in terms of an appetizer-sized plate rather than dinner-sized,” De Laurentiis points out. Your meals can be as following: a 3-ounce serving of meat, poultry or fish is about the size of a deck of cards; two servings of pasta or rice is the size of a baseball; a bread serving is the size of a CD case; one serving of cheese is the size of four dice.
Shop by the calendar: “Eat what’s in season. When you don’t, it doesn’t taste like anything, and it needs a load of fat or salt or sugar to taste good. A strawberry only tastes like a strawberry certain times of the year.”
Don’t deprive yourself of your preferred food. To walk off the pounds she gained while pregnant with her daughter, De Laurentiis didn’t survive on rice cakes, neither did she sweated them off locking herself up in a gym. She admits: “I ate smaller meals. You should eat everything, but a little bit of it.”
And enjoy your food. That’s also very important: “Tell yourself that you’ll savor every bite,” De Laurentiis advises. If you learn to do this you’ll come to be satisfied with less.
Good luck!
